Rachel Thompson
studied Viola Performance at the
University of Canterbury
with Beth Rogers.
In
1980, she was awarded
a scholarship to The
New School of Music
in Philadelphia, USA,
where Thompson completed a Diploma in Viola
Performance studying with Max Aronoff and Kim
Kashkashian.
Winning the New Zealand Concerto
Competition in 1984 with a performance of
Bartok, Thompson returned to the United States;
this year of study was undertaken as a graduate
assistant to Kashkashian at the University of
Bloomington, Indiana.
Rachel Thompson has lived in Christchurch for
the past 20 years. Over this period she has
performed in various chamber ensembles, as a
tenured violist in the Christchurch Symphony and
as a casual violist in the New Zealand Symphony
Orchestra.
Currently she teaches the viola for The Pettman Junior Academy, and is Acting Principal Violist in the Christchurch Symphony.
