Born in London, Leo Phillips studied the violin both in Europe, with David Takeno and Sandor Vegh, and in the US with Dorothy DeLay and Shmuel Ashkenasi. He has appeared as violin soloist with many orchestras including the London Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and L'Orchestre de Chambre de Geneve, and as Leader/Concertmaster with many more including The Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the BBC Orchestras, The Halle Orchestra, The Hong Kong Philharmonic and The National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa.
A dedicated chamber musician, Leo was a founder member of the Vellinger String Quartet and was Leader of the internationally acclaimed Nash Ensemble of London with whom he toured extensively and made many critically acclaimed recordings and broadcasts. He is much in demand as a violin teacher and chamber music coach and he has taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School in London, Princeton University in the US, Silapakorn University in Bangkok, The Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong, The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore, The Sydney Conservatorium and the Universities of Canterbury, Christchurch, and Otago, Dunedin in New Zealand.
As a conductor, Leo has appeared with The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, The Thailand Philharmonic, The Siam Chamber Orchestra, The Symphony Orchestra of India, The Philippine Philharmonic, and he has trained orchestras in Australia and Singapore. In 2011 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the newly formed Galyani Vadhana Institute Orchestra based in Bangkok.
