Jessica Shaw

Jessica ShawJessica Shaw was the first New Zealand student to graduate with a Master of Music in recorder performance, from Auckland University.

A recipient of the NUFFIC and Reardon Postgraduate Scholarships, she spent seven years in the Netherlands studying with internationally acclaimed recorder virtuosi Han Tol, Thera de Clerck and Sebastien Marq, graduating with diplomas in advanced solo performance, chamber music, and recorder teaching from the Rotterdam Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. During her studies, Jessica performed with ensembles in Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, England, Portugal, and Hungary, and performed in a concert tour and live broadcasts of the first modern production of Lully’s opera ‘Thesee’ directed by William Christie.

Since returning to New Zealand, Jessica has an active career as a professional recorder player and teacher. She performs regularly as a member of the ensembles Kowhai Baroque and The New Zealand Chamber Soloists, and has also featured as a soloist with AK Barok, The Age of Discovery, Bach Musica NZ, Extempore, OKTA, and the Karlheinz Company.

Jessica is Artist-Teacher for recorder at Waikato University, and has also taught recorder at the Auckland University School of Music. She maintains a busy Auckland recorder teaching studio, and conducts five recorder ensembles. Jessica has had a leading role as a performer and tutor at numerous recorder festivals and workshops throughout New Zealand and in Australia, and has featured in live interviews and recordings for both Concert and National Radio. She is President, Musical Director and Music Librarian of the Society of Recorder Players (NZ) Inc.
